Abstract

This article addresses the development of agriculture, the improvement of potato cultivation efficiency, and the protection of potato crops against the Colorado potato beetle, one of the most harmful pests of this crop. The study analyzes scientific information on the morphological structure and biological characteristics of the Colorado potato beetle, as well as the nature of the damage it causes to potato plants. In addition, the article considers the potential use of ultrasonic vibrations as an environmentally safe and innovative method for controlling this pest. Based on scientific sources, the paper summarizes the mechanisms of the biological effects of ultrasound on living organisms, its possible influence on the physiological state and behavioral responses of insects, and the results of laboratory experiments. Ultrasound is characterized as sound waves with frequencies above the human hearing range, generally exceeding 20 kHz.

The article substantiates the possibility that Colorado potato beetles may perceive ultrasonic vibrations and that such exposure may induce various biological changes in the insect organism. Ultrasonic waves may affect biological systems, particularly cell membranes, the nervous system, and the functioning of internal organs. As a result, ultrasound exposure may disrupt insect locomotor activity, feeding behavior, and their ability to damage potato plants. Therefore, the use of ultrasonic vibrations is considered an environmentally safe, energy-efficient, and promising electrophysical method for controlling the Colorado potato beetle compared with conventional chemical plant protection measures.
